Day 14: 2 Nephi 13-17

Welcome to Day 14...

Isaiah explains what will happen if the Israelites, or we, keep putting our trust in false practices. He calls the Israelites the "daughters of Zion," which represents people of the covenant, and says they are like a prideful woman who will be brought down if they do not repent. Yikes. He talking about church members, people. That's us! Time to take personal inventory.

Chapter 14 is more hopeful, telling what happens when the daughters humble themselves and turn to the Lord. Isaiah's message to us: Repent, be humble, turn to the Lord.

When Jesus visited the Nephites in America. He taught. “great are the words of Isaiah” and told the Nephites they “ought to search these things diligently.” (3 Nephi 23:1)

The supplemental material will help you to understand how great the words of Isaiah are! Enjoy your study session!

2 Nephi 16:10"Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes—lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted and be healed."

"Wo unto them that call evil good, and good evil, that put darkness for light, and light for darkness, that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!"  2 Nephi 15:20

“I have always found that when we do the little things correctly, the Lord gives us the strength to accomplish big things... You might not always understand the reasons for some rules or commandments, but if you will follow them even in the little things you will have more strength to do big things... And you will have the great blessing of knowing that you are on the Lord's side and that He is on yours.” --Donald L. Hallstrom

  • Record impressions and verses that stood out to you in your journal.
  • Close with prayer and enjoy the sweetness of the spirit just invited into your day.

Note: This book is "user friendly." Powerful but entertaining (typical John Bytheway) it is very helpful in understanding Isaiah.

If we're going to get on the bus and drive through Isaiah National Forest, we're going to need the keys—you'll find them in 2 Nephi 25 (see also McConkie, "Ten Keys to Understanding Isaiah," Ensign, October 1973, 78–83).

As you know, the largest block of Isaiah chapters in the Book of Mormon is 2 Nephi 12–24. Immediately after Nephi quotes these chapters, he gives us the keys to understand them. Briefly, the keys are:

Learn the manner of prophesying among the Jews
Have the spirit of prophecy
Know the regions round about (or the geography)
Live in the last days (see 2 Nephi 25:1–8)
